A shocking $7 million goat scheme fraud has rocked Zimbabwe, and the legal battle is finally reaching its climax. Justice Pisirayi Kwenda has set the stage for pre-sentencing proceedings on Wednesday, bringing an end to a lengthy and controversial court case.
Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe, two businessmen, have been found guilty of defrauding the Ministry of Agriculture. They secured an $87 million tender for the Presidential Goat Scheme using a phantom company called Blackdeck. This scheme, which has been described as a 'long-overdue' conclusion by Justice Kwenda, has kept the duo in custody since their arrest in June last year.
But here's where it gets interesting. Mpofu and Chimombe tried to delay their sentencing by requesting a written copy of the judgment. Justice Kwenda, however, saw through their tactics, stating that the ruling had already been delivered in open court and that their lawyers should have taken notes. He described their actions as a mere attempt to stall the process.
And this is the part most people miss: the duo then tried to appeal to the Supreme Court, but their application was swiftly dismissed. Justice Kwenda made it clear that there would be no further delays, setting the date for pre-sentencing procedures on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, at 2 p.m.
