Padres Re-Sign Kyle Hart: Breaking Down the Contract & Rotation Impact (2025)

The San Diego Padres are making moves! They've re-signed pitcher Kyle Hart, a decision that sparks both intrigue and strategic thinking within the team. Let's break down the details and see what this means for the Padres.

At 10:34 am, the Padres announced they'd inked Hart to a one-year deal, including a club option for the 2027 season. While the initial terms were undisclosed, we quickly got more information.

According to Robert Murray of Fansided, Hart is set to earn $1 million in 2026. The club option is valued at $2.5 million, with a $200,000 buyout. But here's where it gets controversial: escalators based on games played could increase the buyout to $500,000, and escalators based on games started could raise the overall option price to $4.5 million.

Hart, who turns 33 next week, had a challenging year, posting a 5.86 ERA in 43 innings. He split time between the rotation and bullpen. This follows a previous agreement in February where Hart signed a $1.5 million guarantee with a $5 million club option for the 2026 season, which the Padres declined earlier this month.

His performance at Triple-A El Paso wasn't much better, with a 4.10 ERA in 63 2/3 innings. 2025 marked his return to the majors since his 2020 debut with the Red Sox, where he only pitched 11 innings.

Before this, Hart played in various minor leagues and even pitched for the KBO's NC Dinos. In 2024, he excelled with a 2.69 ERA and a 28.8% strikeout rate over 157 innings. This led him to try his hand at the majors again, but the success didn't follow. This isn't unique, as even 2023 KBO MVP Erick Fedde struggled to replicate his KBO success in the big leagues.

But why did the Padres re-sign Hart? They need pitching depth, especially with key players like Dylan Cease and Michael King leaving via free agency. While Joe Musgrove is expected back, and Nick Pivetta is a veteran, the team still has questions in their rotation.

The Padres' need for depth is crucial. In 2021, a lack of pitching forced them to rely on veterans and they narrowly missed the playoffs.

Signing Hart provides budget-friendly depth, but it won't solve their need for impact starters. The Padres have faced financial uncertainties, and the potential sale of the franchise further complicates things. However, they did manage to add Pivetta last year, so they might find a creative solution, such as trying Mason Miller or Adrian Morejon in the rotation.

What do you think? Do you agree with the Padres' decision to re-sign Hart, or would you have preferred they focus on a more impactful signing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
