Rugby league enthusiasts, get ready to cheer—this long-standing frustration from the NRL fixture that left fans outraged is finally being ditched after 17 years of waiting!
Last year's NRL schedule drew sharp criticism from supporters, but the good news is that a significant adjustment to the 2026 calendar was unveiled on Friday morning, promising to make things much more palatable.

The complete 2026 fixture will be revealed at 11am AEDT on Friday, and foxsports.com.au will deliver in-depth breakdowns of the biggest beneficiaries and casualties from the schedule.
But here's where it gets interesting: While they've already teased some blockbuster opener games (https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/nrl-2026-draw-and-fixture-details-round-1-fixtures-season-opener-brisbane-broncos-premiership-defence-daly-cherryevans-sydney-roosters-debut-manly-sea-eagles-state-of-origin-details-latest-news/news-story/ceaed9e39de358e009804545078dbace), the NRL has delivered a fan-pleasing victory by banning back-to-back match-ups between the same teams within four or five weeks.

In simpler terms, supporters won't endure the annoyance of seeing their favorite squad clash against the same opponent twice in just a month's time, a recurring headache from 2024.
The 2025 season saw seven such quick rematches over four weeks and eight within five, but the 2026 version slashes that number to zero, with only five occurring over six-week spans. For beginners in rugby league, this means teams get more breathing room between encounters with rivals, reducing potential fatigue or travel burdens and allowing for a fairer, less repetitive experience.
The last NRL season without these close rematches inside six rounds was 2008, though back then it involved a hefty 40 five-day recovery periods between games, which could have worn players down even more. And this is the part most people miss: While eliminating rapid-fire duels sounds great, some might argue it could dampen the intensity of rivalries, as teams might not build the same momentum or grudge matches that keep fans on the edge. But here's where it gets controversial—does prioritizing player welfare and fan convenience outweigh the electric thrill of frequent showdowns?
Friday's update brings relief, as teams won't linger off the field for long anyway, thanks to the NRL's affirmation of the yearly pre-season challenge, airing live exclusively on Fox League, set to launch on February 7.
The Bulldogs will square off against the Cowboys at 5:30pm at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, followed by the Dragons versus the Knights at 7:30pm.
On another note, the NRL has teased that Dylan Brown will reunite with his old Parramatta comrades for the first time in Round 13, when the Eels meet the Knights at McDonald Jones Stadium on May 30.
This is just one of numerous grudge matches lighting up the 2026 lineup, including Daly Cherry-Evans' homecoming to 4 Pines Park to challenge his ex-club, Manly, in Round 4.
Additionally, the All-Stars game ventures beyond Australia for only the second occasion, scheduled for February 15 in Hamilton, New Zealand.
