The Coaching Carousel Spins On
It's October, and already, the coaching carousel is in full swing. With multiple high-profile jobs up for grabs, the speculation is heating up. One name that's caught everyone's attention is Dan Mullen, the current head coach at UNLV.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Despite the rumors and the open positions, Mullen is standing firm. He's made it clear that he's not going anywhere, and he's committed to staying with the UNLV Rebels for the foreseeable future.
"I'll be here," Mullen proclaimed during a recent press conference. "You want me to stick around? I'm gonna be the head coach at UNLV next year. I'm not leaving. I told the players the same thing."
Mullen's journey to UNLV is an interesting one. After a successful stint at Florida, he took some time away from coaching. But now, he's back in the game, and he's making a strong impact. UNLV is currently undefeated, and Mullen's presence has been a key factor in their success.
In an era where the transfer portal dominates the conversation, Mullen wants to send a clear message to his players. He doesn't want them worrying about his future plans.
"It's all about the transfer portal these days," Mullen explained. "I told the players, 'Don't get excited thinking I might leave for a 'better' place. I'm committed to UNLV.' You guys are stuck with me!"
Despite his firm stance, Mullen's name has been linked to multiple job openings. On3's Pete Nakos suggested him as a top candidate for both the Arkansas and UCLA positions. But Urban Meyer, the former Ohio State and Florida coach, had a different idea. He pitched Mullen as the perfect replacement for James Franklin at Penn State.
"How about Dan Mullen?" Meyer asked. "He's undefeated, scored 51 last week, and he's got northeast roots."
With a career record of 109-61 as a head coach at Mississippi State, Florida, and now UNLV, Mullen has proven his worth. His time away from the sidelines didn't dampen his passion, and he's back with a vengeance.
So, will Mullen stay true to his word and remain at UNLV? Or will the lure of a bigger program be too tempting?
What do you think? Is Mullen's commitment to UNLV a sign of loyalty, or is he missing out on a bigger opportunity? Let us know in the comments!
