Bolivia Election 2025: Rodrigo Paz Wins, Ends Socialist Rule (2025)

Bolivia's Political Shift: Centrist Rodrigo Paz Elected, Ending Socialist Rule

Bolivia has elected Rodrigo Paz, a centrist senator, as its new president, marking a significant shift away from the nearly two decades of rule by the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party. With nearly all votes counted, Paz secured 54.6% of the votes in the runoff election, defeating right-wing candidate Jorge 'Tuto' Quiroga.

The election outcome reflects a desire for change among Bolivian voters, who have endured an economic crisis and internal strife within the MAS party, which has dominated the country's politics since 2006. Paz, a 58-year-old politician, emerged as a surprise frontrunner in the initial election round in August and maintained his lead in the runoff, receiving 45.4% of the votes.

Paz's victory speech emphasized his commitment to ending fuel shortages and addressing Bolivia's broader economic challenges. He pledged to attract international investment and stimulate private-sector growth. His moderate and centrist stance has resonated with undecided and disillusioned left-leaning voters who sought change without endorsing Quiroga.

The MAS candidate failed to advance to the runoff, and Quiroga has gracefully conceded the election, congratulating his rival. Paz's supporters celebrated in La Paz, the administrative capital, expressing hope for a new direction for the country.

Bolivia faces critical issues, including fuel shortages causing long queues at gas stations, a scarcity of US dollars, and soaring inflation. Natural gas exports, a significant revenue source, have also declined. Paz's campaign slogan, 'Capitalism for All,' promises free-market reforms and social programs to support the nation's most vulnerable.

His plans include easing credit access for small businesses, reducing taxes, lowering import tariffs, combating corruption, and decentralizing the government. However, Paz also aims to eliminate fuel subsidies, which have contributed to shortages and long lines at gas stations by selling fuel at prices below import costs.

Bolivia's international relations may improve with Paz's election. The country's strained ties with the United States, absent of formal diplomatic relations since 2008, could thaw. The US has accused Bolivia of failing to meet its anti-narcotics obligations and criticized its recognition of Venezuela's president, Nicolás Maduro. The US State Department has expressed eagerness to collaborate with Paz to restore economic stability and strengthen security.

Additionally, Paz might reconsider Bolivia's alliances with Venezuela and Cuba to rebuild relations with the US. Regarding China, a crucial trade partner, Paz will likely seek new foreign investments and exports. His choice of Edman Lara as his running mate, a former police captain known for his anti-corruption stance and strong social media presence, has likely appealed to working-class voters and those frustrated with government corruption.

The MAS party's popularity suffered due to internal divisions between former President Evo Morales and outgoing President Luis Arce, leading to Morales' disqualification from the election due to term limits. Despite facing allegations of statutory rape and fathering a child with a teenager, which he denies as politically motivated, Morales continues to be protected by his loyal supporters.

The election result signifies a desire for change and renewal among Bolivians, but Paz faces the challenge of addressing a divided country and severe economic issues. Restoring economic credibility and uniting the nation will be complex tasks for his administration, which will commence on November 8, 2025.
